The Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso) has said the country is on track to meet its goal of $12 billion this year, after achieving $10.4 billion in 2013.

Results for the first half of the year indicate the value of footwear exports rose by 14% and handbags by over 18%.

Up to 70% of the leather needed for footwear and handbag production - S$4.2 billion - was imported, mainly from the South Korea, Taiwan, Italy and Thailand in the first six months.

There are 812 firms in the country's leather and footwear industry, according to Phan Chi Dung, director of the Ministry of Industry and Trade's Light Industry Department.
