Vietnam footwear industry makes its mark on Thailand

Exports of footwear from Vietnam to Thailand had a value of $25.9 million in 2013, an increase of almost 300% since 2010.

This has led to speculation in Vietnam that Thailand will cease to produce its own footwear in the future and more or less rely on imports.

Thailand is facing a shortage of labour, observers in Vietnam said, as well as challenges posed by an unstable curreny, high labour costs and competition from other producers. Several months ago, a delegation of 30 Thai businesses operating in the sector visited Vietnam to seek long-term investment opportunities.
