Advanced materials specialist says leather is “unbeatable”

Digital design specialist Assa Ashuach attended the Micam X innovation hub on September 21 to provide an update on a collaborative footwear project called Refream.

Artists, scientists and designers have worked together on the project with the aim of “rethinking the manufacturing process of the fashion industry”.

A new “biometric evolutionary shoe”, the Evolve IM, is the latest product to have come out of London-based Mr Ashuach’s involvement in Refream. It uses embedded, 3D-printed sensor technology to collect the wearer’s biometric data. Other technology it uses includes thousands of Stratasys gel particles of different densities to capture information about how the shoe works on the wearer’s. “Through this, the shoe sends data to the Cloud so that new versions of the shoe will be better,” he told Micam X.

In spite of working closely with these new materials and technologies, Mr Ashuach surprised some in the audience by saying: “Leather is an unbeatable material. It’s optimised by nature and it’s been growing on animals for millions of years.”
