Described by the brand as turning “negative space into positive (aesthetic) energy”, the shoe was a response to this charge: reduce material waste by increasing pattern efficiency.
According to Nike, the shoe demonstrates how offcuts from traditional cut-and-sew footwear can become critical parts of a shoe’s construction and design.
In the case of the Atsuma, the lateral side logo is mirrored by a cutout version of the logo on the medial. At the same time, the shoe’s heel counter and eyestay “exhibit playful employment of negative space”, as does the hangtag, which is made from a cutout on the outsole.
