Lukewarm welcome for China-US trade deal

Immediately the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) issued a lukewarm response. Its president, Steve Lamar, said the deal offers only limited tariff relief to US companies and consumers.
He explained that all products imported from China to the US that have been subjected to tariffs during the dispute will continue to be penalised after the implementation of the deal. He said this includes 53% of all the footwear that China exports to the US.
“These tariffs are a huge tax on our industry, directly impacting our four million workers and each and every family [in the US]. The administration is literally taxing Americans to get dressed every morning, and promising to do that for the foreseeable future.”
He argued that the trade deal does little to help US manufacturers, saying it allows China to keep in place “huge retaliatory tariffs” on US exports of hides, leather and shoes.
