US footwear charity fields ‘hundreds of harrowing calls’ daily
The US-based Two Ten Footwear Foundation, a charity set up to help workers in the footwear sector, has estimated more than 100,000 people – a third of the industry’s workforce – are in need of financial assistance.

“Every single day, Two Ten Footwear Foundation responds to hundreds of harrowing calls for help – associates who lost their jobs following corporate bankruptcy, are dealing with a family medical crisis, or are facing eviction because they’ve fallen behind on their rent,” it said.

It has asked for donations to help support more people: “Your support will go directly towards supporting these colleagues and their families and help them get back on their feet.”

Two Ten was founded in 1939 in the leather district in Boston, the birthplace of the shoe industry in the United States. During the Great Depression, a group gathered to contribute some of their earnings for whoever's family was most in need that week. The group grew rapidly and in 1945 became a national organisation.

Two Ten began supporting the industry through emergency financial relief for hospital bills, mortgage payments, funeral expenses, utility payments and other expenses.

As well as these financial services, today the charity funds scholarships to footwear design schools.
