Allbirds marks Earth Day with emissions pledge
In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, sustainable shoe brand Allbirds has pledged to go 100% carbon neutral in 2019 and to work in the longer term on eliminating its carbon emissions.

The brand already makes its shoes from responsible and renewable materials, such as wool, Lenzing’s wood-based Tencel fibre and an EVA resin derived from sugar cane, but it has said it now aims to offset the carbon dioxide emissions caused by its overall operations.

From 2019, for every tonne of carbon its supply chain emits, it has pledged to pay to take a tonne of carbon out of the atmosphere.

Initially, this will be achieved by purchasing credits from third-party verified emissions reduction projects. These initiatives carry out activities like protecting the trees that capture and store carbon and supporting wind energy. The three areas on which Allbirds will focus are land, energy and air.

In the future, it hopes to reduce its carbon emissions directly. This will include continuing to source low carbon materials, such as Tencel, and using ocean shipping instead of air shipping.

The brand has been quick to acknowledge that achieving zero emissions of carbon is an unrealistic target at present, and so it has said it will also continue to develop technologies and solutions that bring this closer to being a reality.
