Tencel makes an impact on Allbirds footwear collection
US-based sustainable footwear brand Allbirds has turned to Lenzing’s plant-based Tencel fibre to reduce the environmental impact of its new footwear collection.

The brand specialises in shoes made from wool, but it describes the material used in its ‘Tree’ collection as its “most sustainable material to-date”.

The use of Tencel fibres adds moisture-wicking properties to the shoes and the smooth mesh construction offers increased breathability and comfort. A 3D-knitting process is used to add extra support, while a wool-lined insole and heel cup are designed to ensure a comfortable fit.

The Tree collection features Allbirds’ signature Runner shoe, as well as a new style, the Skipper, which it describes as “a modern take on the 1930’s classic boat shoe”. Both are available for men and women.

“The introduction of our revolutionary Tree collection marks a major moment for Allbirds in our quest for a more comfortable and sustainable future,” Allbirds co-founders Tim Brown and Joey Zwillinger have explained. “This material doesn’t compromise for comfort or for the environment, and we’re excited to challenge industry norms via material innovation once again.”
