Young consumers expect high-end shoes to be “sustainable and authentic”
Leather chemicals manufacturer Stahl recently hosted students from North Carolina State University at its headquarters in Waalwijk. The aim of the exercise was the 42 students to learn more about the luxury sector, in particular about footwear, and to discuss research that the students have carried out on consumer needs.

North Carolina State offers a global luxury management programme and, within that, this group of students undertook a sustainability in luxury course. As part of the exercise, they spent a whole semester carrying out research on the subject.

Stahl has said that one of the key conclusions to have come out of the research and its follow-up discussions with the students is that millennial and Generation Z consumers expect premium footwear brands to be sustainable, authentic, unique and durable.

At the same time, it said transparent communication about the entire production process is of crucial importance if premium and luxury footwear brands are to have a successful future.

“We are constantly challenged by our clients in the luxury segment, and we welcome it as a great opportunity,” said Stahl’s sustainability director, Michael Costello. “We have partnered up with NC State University to help us think differently about the footwear industry and supply chain and to better understand the needs and values of Gen Z and millennials when it comes to footwear. It is great to see that these generations are prioritising sustainability in the production process and supply chain. We are inspired by their ideas and aspirations.”
