Alpargatas struggled outside of Brazil in first quarter

16/05/2018
Casual footwear manufacturer Alpargatas has reported an 11.7% increase in revenue during the first quarter of 2018. The company’s sales for the period totalled 902.1 million reais ($247 million).

This increase was driven by strong performance in Brazil, its domestic market, where sales jumped 22.9% to R$572.9 million ($156.8 million).

In Argentina, where Alpargatas was founded, the company saw its revenue fall 2.6% to R$150.1 million ($41 million).

This report comes just over a week since it was revealed by local media that Alpargatas Argentina was expecting to implement more temporary shutdowns at its factories in the country. They will take place at its facilities in Corrientes and in Tucumán and will affect more than 1,800 employees.

During the first quarter of 2018, Alpargatas’ international sales (those outside of Argentina and Brazil) fell 4.4% to R$179.1 million ($49 million).
