The president of the autonomous community of La Rioja, José Ignacio Ceniceros, travelled to Milan at the start of the February 2018 edition of Micam to lend his support to exhibitors from that part of Spain.

In all, 25 footwear manufacturers and brands from La Rioja signed up to attend this first Micam edition of the year. La Rioja is Spain’s second-most important footwear-producing region, after Valencia.

Commenting after visiting the participating companies’ stands, Mr Ceniceros complimented their dynamism and commitment to innovation. In 2017, his government set aside a budget of more than €450,000 to help footwear firms travel to international exhibitions, with the aim of boosting their overseas business.

In 2016, La Rioja had 137 companies involved in shoe production, with a combined workforce of more than 3,000 people. In the first 11 months of 2017, export earnings from shipments of shoes made in La Rioja were more than €180 million.
