US trade body confirms Chinese and Vietnamese footwear imports

Andy Polk, vice-president of the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) association, has confirmed to footwear biz the percentages of Chinese and Vietnamese shoe imports by volume and value over the past 20 years.

Organisers of Italy’s Riva Schuh footwear fair, held in mid-January in Riva del Garda, suggested recent analysis showed the US’s footwear imports from China had fallen from 75% of its total seven years ago to 15%. [They have since told leatherbiz they meant a 15% decline.]

Mr Polk said that although the figure had fallen, it was still nearly 70%, with Vietnam supplying around 15%.

The percentage of shoes imported to the US from China steadily rose from around 67% in 1996 to a high of 87.2% in 2007, but has since fallen as prices have risen and other destinations have taken advantage. For the past three years, the figure has been around 70% (71.6% by volume in 2017, and 56% in dollar terms).

Imports from Vietnam, which were negligible in 1996 (0.2%), rose to 4% in 2007 and up to 16.9% in 2017. They also accounted for 21.2% of imports in terms of value last year.

The 90th edition of Expo Riva Schuh, and co-located accessories fair Gardabags, will be held between June 16 and 19.
