Toms chooses old friend as creative director

Footwear brand Toms has hired John Whitledge, co-founder of the Trovata fashion brand, as creative director, according to a report in the LA Times.

Mr Whitledge met Toms founder Blake Mycoskie more than 10 years ago and designed the company’s first range of sunglasses in 2011 as part of the one for one campaign – for each pair bought, another was donated through a charity scheme.

“He was a huge mentor to me,” said Mr Mycoskie at the time. “When I asked him to design the first line of shades I knew I was giving him something that was more than just a design challenge. Now, more than 500,000 people have got their eyesight back.”

Mr Mycoskie stepped down as CEO in 2015, hiring Jim Alling to take his place, but still works on the marketing.

One of Whitledge’s his first tasks as creative director will be to redesign the classic alpargata slip-on design, said the report.
