Assomac “holds its ground” amid global uncertainty

Italy’s main leather and footwear machine manufacturers’ association, Assomac, has released details of the performance of its member companies in 2016 following its annual general meeting at the end of June.

According to Assomac’s figures, its members achieved revenue of €625 million in 2016, a 7.2% improvement compared to the previous year.

Approximately 75% of this turnover came from exports, which increased 8.2% year-on-year to €467 million. Within this figure, exports of tanning machinery increased 9.4%, exports of footwear machinery grew 2.1%, and there was a 78% jump in exports of leathergoods machinery. The organisation revealed that the foreign sales of Assomac’s members have grown 38.4% since 2012.

“Despite all the uncertainty, our sector has managed to hold its ground,” said Assomac president, Gabriella Marchioni Bocca. “With world trade witnessing a slowdown in growth rates, footwear, leathergoods and tanning machinery has registered extremely positive levels in all sectors.”

She said the strong performance of Assomac’s members in 2016 is an indication of how competitive Italy’s machinery manufacturers are.

She added that it also demonstrated a “structural change in the markets”, giving the example of Asia. She explained that the growth in footwear production in this region has slowed while consumption continues to increase, which means a greater share of production is now for domestic consumption and exports are falling.
