On taking up office in mid-May, Mr Arias Frías said a new project that local manufacturer Flex is working on for Nike, making ‘smart’ (electronic-enabled) sneakers, has attracted a large number of workers from other companies in the area and that, now, new workers are needed across the industry in Jalisco.
He said he would make training new recruits to the footwear industry one of the priorities of his presidency of CICEJ.
Mr Arias Frías said the industry in Jalisco has a workforce of just over 21,000 people at the moment producing 55 million pairs of shoes a year, 6 million of which go for export. Expanding production capacity in Jalisco would also make it easier for domestic manufacturers to supply the local industry’s needs. At the moment, the new CICEJ president said, Mexico imports around 120 million pairs of shoes and boots per year, 20 million of which come into the country illegally.
