The initiative was launched at the start of 2015 by Italy’s deputy minister for economic development. Among its key aims is to promote footwear exhibitions, including the ongoing Micam shoe fair (February 12-15). It is supported by the Italian footwear manufacturers’ association Assocalzaturifici.
During 2015, Italian companies sold 34.3 million pairs of shoes in Germany, a 7% increase on the previous year. The value of exports increased 1.9% to €949 million. This positive trend continued during the first 10 months of 2016, with exports increasing 0.8% in volume and 2.9% in value.
Siegfrid Jacobs, president of the BDSE, Germany’s Federal Association of the German Footwear Retail Trade, explained that this growth came despite a drop in sales for German retailers during that period.
Retailers specialising in footwear experienced a 3-4% decrease in revenue, according to Mr Jacobs.
The Made in Italy project said that Germany offers “interesting opportunities” for Italian companies. It believes that the quality of footwear manufactured in Italy is “very attractive” to German consumers.
