FICE seminar focuses on Spain’s shoe exports to the US
09/11/2016
Companies attending the seminar learned that the US represent’s the sixth-largest export market for the Spanish shoe industry, and the biggest outside the European Union.
In 2015, Spanish manufacturers exported 4.1 million pairs to the US, bringing in export revenues of €178.3 million. However, in total, the US imported 2.5 billion pairs of shoes last year with a combined value of $28.3 billion, giving Spain a share of just over 0.1% in terms of volume and of 0.6% in terms of value.
A stumbling block to growing this market share, seminar participants heard, is that winning inclusion in the multi-brand shoe departments of big-chain department stores in the US is difficult, making smaller boutiques a more obvious route. But companies were encouraged to consider working with agents in the US market and even to build up a direct sales presence there.
