Footwear organisations unite to push TTIP

The presidents of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA), the European Confederation of the Footwear Industry (CEC), and Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) have issued a joint statement urging the US and the European Union (EU) to eliminate footwear trade barriers in the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

The statement also called for standardisation of labelling, product safety, testing regulations and prohibited substances for the footwear industry, flexibility in the determination of the rules of origin for footwear products and mutual recognition of regulations and standards.

AAFA president and CEO, Rick Helfenbein, said that standardising footwear regulations would “reduce cost” and provide “definitive benefits” to AAFA members and customers.

Cleto Sagripanti, president of the CEC, insisted that US and European companies need to “speak the same language in terms of the safety of shoes they manufacture".

FDRA president, Matt Priest, added that lower duties through TTIP would mean US and European companies “can create new good paying jobs across our supply chains".
