Polarised views at Hong Kong TPP debate

31/03/2016
Representatives of the French and Italian footwear federations took part in the Global Retail Footwear Conference (GRFC) in Hong Kong  on March 31.

France’s Claude Eric Paquin and Italy’s Tommaso Cancellara spoke on global trade and the Transpacific Partnership (TPP), and took different views to that of Leslie Gallin, a board member of American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) and Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA).

The US footwear industry is set to benefit from the TPP alongside countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia, while Europeans could potentially lose out as they are not included in the deal. The US and Europe are debating their own agreement, the TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership).

Joining them in the debate was Lu Hua, director of the footwear committee for the China Leather Industry Association, while other topics discussed on the day included ecommerce and millennial customers.
