A report on the China Leather Industry Associations (CLIA)’s website suggests the country processes 23% of the hides that become available to tanners globally - 70 million per year.

This figure ties in with the global total of around 275 million cited by David Peters, a columnist on sister site www.leatherbiz.com.

The report quotes analysts as saying the sector grew 8% in value in the first 11 months of 2014 to 146.1 billion yuan ($23 billion) while profits increased 20% to 9.63 billion yuan ($1.5 billion).
