The China Leather Industry Association reported that the city earned $380 million from exports last year, with the area’s leading producer, Taizhou Sitemei, rapidly increasing trade with Africa.
Wenling exports 200 million pairs of shoes to 150 countries and regions a year. The CLIA reports that footwear made in the city is sold in Africa at prices 5% to 10% lower than similar products, and that Chinese companies have cut costs further by establishing their own outlets in the continent.
It reported that the increase in demand from emerging markets is offsetting the decline from traditional markets like Europe.
