Footwear manufacturers from the South African provinces of Gauteng, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape travelled to China in mid-June to start a government-backed three-month training programme in shoe design and manufacture.

South Africa’s minister for trade and industry, Dr Rob Davies, said his government had secured support from China to help it “scarce skills” in the industry. He went on to say that South Africa’s aim is to increase the numbers of skilled entrepreneurs in leather, footwear, textiles and clothing, to save existing jobs in these sectors and create new ones.

In all, 28 footwear producers travelled to China. The course is based in Fuzhou.
