Another prominent figure in the Spanish shoe industry dies

Following news of the death of former Spanish footwear industry leader Rafael Calvo earlier in October, the sector has reported the loss of a second senior figure.

Jaime  Mascaró, founder of the high-end footwear firm that bears his name, died in the early hours of October 15. He was 74 years old.

Based in the traditional footwear-producing region of the Balearic Islands, Mr Mascaró transformed his family’s small, artisanal shop, Zapatillas Ferrerias, in Menorca into a modern footwear production firm. He expanded the company’s ranges and began to ship shoes overseas and changed the company’s name to Jaime Mascaró in 1980.

Today, Mascaró has four brands of its own, with flats specialist Pretty Ballerinas probably the best known internationally. The others are Loafers, Jaime Mascaró and Úrsula Mascaró (Mr Mascaró’s daughters Úrsula and Lina are both involved in the running of the company, as creative director and commercial director respectively).

In a statement, the company paid tribute to Mr Mascaró, saying he was proud to come from Menorca and to have turned his parents’ small workshop into one of the most prominent footwear companies in Spain, with sales across all continents.
