After visiting India to gain experience of footwear courses, Ethiopia’s Leather Industries Development Institute (LIDI) has developed a footwear engineering degree in Addis Ababa, with students able to enrol in September.

Developed in partnership with India’s Central Leather Research institute and Footwear Design & Development Institute, the course will be made up of two years of theoretical study and three years of practical training.

Wondu Legesse, director general of the LIDI, said leather courses are planned for other universities in the country. "The training will have a big impact on the sector, providing more experts in the manufacturing industry," he added.
