Ethiopia’s Leather Industry Development Institute (TIDI) is working closely with the government-backed Made By Ethiopia initiative to promote the country’s leather and footwear industries to potential international partners.

Made by Ethiopia was founded by footwear entrepreneur Bethlehem Tilahun. It has worked with companies across the country to encourage them to produce high-quality footwear.

Wondu Legesse, director general of the TIDI, said 10 Ethiopian footwear manufacturers are collaborating as part of the project, which will see them supply products mainly destined for the US market. She added that Memoranda of Understanding have already been signed with several US sourcing brands.

The aim of the project is to establish Ethiopia as the best alternative sourcing market for international companies after Bangladesh and Vietnam.

Ms Bethlehem told local media organisations that several companies have already shown an interest in sourcing footwear from Ethiopia, including Wolverine, Caleres and Under Armour.
