Graham Butlin, a former director of SATRA (Shoe and Allied Trade Research Association), has died aged 84.

He was with the UK-based institute for 32 years and was director for 14, retiring in 1991 aged 61.

In the 1960s he led the team responsible for a number of shoemaking innovations including moist heat setting, which won the Queen’s Award for Technology.

As director he played a major role in SATRA’s international growth and was a tireless traveller, “a superb lecturer and a skilled negotiator”.

The company describes him as one of the “most influential figureheads in the footwear industry of its time”.

Mr Butlin was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to the footwear industry in the 1983 New Year’s Honours List.
