Call for projects to share €31.5m EU pot

20/05/2013
The European Commission has launched a call for proposals for the best 45 eco-innovation projects that will receive financing to cover up to 50% of their costs.

Last year, a scheme looking at ways of producing leather shoes that are free from harmful chemicals won support and is currently under way. The aim of the project, TiLEATHER, is to introduce into the European market leather produced using titanium-tanning techniques, where chromium salts are replaced and there is a reduction of the pollutant load in wastewater.

The project is being coordinated by Spanish footwear association INESCOP and involves Spanish tannery Industrias del Curtido (Incusa) as well as footwear brands Fluchos in Spain, Euroka in Portugal and Mille in France.

Businesses throughout Europe have until September 5, 2013 to put in their proposals for bringing novel environmental solutions to the market in five areas: material recycling, water, sustainable building products, green business or the food and drink sector. The EU has EUR 31.5 million available.

European commissioner for the environment Janez Potocnik said: "Eco-innovative businesses are the enablers of that transformation for the whole economy. I especially encourage small and medium-sized enterprises to apply for funding and help Europe to build on its lead in sectors such as water and waste management."
