Further expansion for Alpargatas

Brazilian footwear brand Alpargatas has announced its intention to make important inroads into the Chilean market.

The company, part of the Camargo Correa conglomerate, has stated that it intends to control 10% of the Chilean athletic footwear market within three years, principally through the Japanese Mizuno brand, on whose behalf it manufactures sports shoes in Brazil.

The company calculates the Chilean sports footwear market to be a fifth of the size of Brazil's (seven million pairs per year, compared to 35 million), but company president, Marcio Utsch, has said Alpargatas is excited by Chile's economic potential.

Mr Utsch said his company had signed distribution deals with two important local sports retail chains, Ripley and Sparta, and insisted these would be instrumental in helping Alpargatas achieve its growth targets.
