On sets global materials policy for responsible sourcing
Swiss sportswear company On has published its first global materials policy, outlining requirements for responsible sourcing and the use of animal-derived materials.
The policy establishes a framework covering environmental integrity and animal welfare, with a mandatory requirement that all animal-derived materials meet standards based on the internationally recognised Five Freedoms.
Materials such as leather, wool and down must be sourced through certification schemes that ensure ethical treatment and traceability from farm region to finished product.
Senior director of sustainability Begum Kurkcu said the company’s approach links material performance with environmental and welfare standards across its natural materials portfolio.
The policy also requires suppliers to provide transparency on sourcing, with compliance verified through internal processes and third-party audits.
Alongside formalising its standards for natural materials, On stated that it will continue investing in alternative materials, including its CleanCloud technology, which uses carbon emissions and bio-attributed inputs.
