Covestro opens TPU plant in Zhuhai

Polymer manufacturer Covestro has begun production at its new thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) plant in Zhuhai, South China. The first phase of the facility is expected to produce around 30,000 tons annually, supplying industries including footwear, automotive, and electronics.

The Zhuhai site is planned in three phases and will reach an annual production capacity of 120,000 tons once fully completed in the 2030s, which would make it Covestro’s largest TPU plant globally.

The facility is supported by a regional R&D centre in Changhua and an application development hub in Guangzhou, enabling closer technical support and application testing for customers in the region.

The site produces TPU under Covestro’s “CQ” designation, which incorporates at least 25 percent alternative, non-fossil raw materials. This allows footwear manufacturers in to incorporate more sustainable materials into their products while maintaining performance standards.
