Marathon record-holder Kelvin Kiptum dies in traffic accident
The authorities in Kenya have confirmed that men’s marathon world record holder, Kelvin Kiptum, died in a road traffic accident on February 11. He was travelling in a car with his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, in western Kenya when the accident occurred. Mr Hakizimana died too.

Kenya’s sports minister, Ababu Namwamba, confirmed the news after visiting the site of the accident. He said Kenya and the entire world had lost an athlete who was a role model to many.

Kelvin Kiptum set a new record of 2:00:35 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon in October. He wore a prototype pair of Nike Alphafly 3 running shoes for the race.
