Marathon record shoe sells out in two minutes

08/01/2024

A limited number of prototype pairs of Nike Alphafly 3 running shoes went on sale on January 4 and sold out almost immediately.

Nike has described the new version of the shoe as “the lightest and most tested Alphafly ever”. Each shoe weighs 218 grammes.

It said the shoe has been validated by elite marathon athletes. In October last year, while the shoe was still in development, Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum wore a prototype to compete in the 2023 Chicago Marathon.

He won the race and set a new world record for the men’s marathon with a time of 2:00:35.

As soon as sales began, the prototype shoes sold out; reports say enthusiasts had bought every pair within two minutes. A number of pairs of the shoes quickly became available on resale sites, some for more than three times the original price of $285.
