China’s return hurts Brazilian footwear exports

New figures from Brazil indicate that the country’s footwear manufacturers exported more than 100 million pairs of shoes in the first ten months of this year, bringing in export revenues of $1 billion.

National footwear industry body Abicalçados said it was pleased to reach the $1 billion milestone, but it pointed out that exports were down by 14% in volume and by 8.8% in value year on year.

Abicalçados president, Haroldo Ferreira, said one of a series of factors that had led to this downturn was the increase in Chinese footwear exports this year following the Asian country’s long spells of covid-19 lockdowns in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

He said figures for the month of September show that Chinese manufacturers shipped 746.4 million pairs, an increase of 3% compared to the same month last year. China’s exports for the first nine months of the year reached a volume of 6.8 billion pairs.

“It’s only logical that increased competition from China in export markets should have an impact on shipments of shoes from Brazil,” Mr Ferreira said.
