Hiking footwear brand celebrates its centenary

German outdoor footwear brand Lowa is celebrating its hundredth birthday; the Bavaria-based brand launched in 1923.

It is widely known that brothers Adi and Rudi Dassler were the founders of well known, Bavaria-based footwear brands adidas and Puma. It is less well known that Lowa shares a similar connection to another hiking footwear brand, Hanwag.

In 1921, Hans Wagner set up Hanwag and opened his mountain boot workshop in Vierkirchen, north of Munich. Two years later, in 1923, his brother, Lorenz Wagner, founded Lowa in Jetzendorf, 12 kilometres away.
