Allen Edmonds: quality is the original form of sustainability

US footwear brand Allen Edmonds has opened a store concept in Boston where its heritage and expertise in shoemaking will be brought to life.

The 100 year-old company makes leather shoes in the US in a 212-step process and has ‘recrafted’ (repaired) more than one million pairs of shoes to date.

It will offer this service, as well as a custom shoemaking option, through the new Port Washington Studio store.

David Law, senior vice-president and general manager for Allen Edmonds, said: “We believe quality is the original form of sustainability; only the very best made shoes can be recrafted.

“There is a quality and classic revival going on - we did that first and haven’t stopped.”

The componentry of customisation is on display including leathers and soles, along with historical images and tools of the trade. Classic wood cases showcase the brand’s best-selling styles.

Additional styles are presented in a series of living rooms, each detailed with warm wood casing and leather seating areas. The brand’s mastery of leather is celebrated in a display of swatches from tanneries around the world.
