Proprietary outsole helps set new Garmont shoe apart

Outdoor footwear brand Garmont has launched a new shoe called 9.81 Pulse, describing it as a low-cut, lightweight, breathable shoe, designed for “summer adventures”, especially for light hiking enthusiasts.

Technical features include asymmetric thermo-formed padding, which the Veneto-based brand says feels comfortable at ankle height, while a system called Fast Lace allows wearers to adjust the fit easily and quickly, adjusting the shoe “to any foot shape”. A protective liner on the instep also prevents debris from entering the shoe during a hike.

It has a recycled PET knitted upper, reinforced by heat-welded fabric side panels that protect the shoe from rocks and uneven terrain, and a midsole that is made from single-density bio-based EVA foam which is 20% made from natural materials obtained from sugarcane.

The 9.81 Pulse also has a proprietary outsole with high-grip areas for support and stability. There are hexagonal lugs of different sizes on the front part of the outsole to increase traction in the initial part of a hike. These specially shaped lugs ensure “the best possible grip even on wet surfaces”, Garmont has said.

Larger lugs are inserted into the heel area to improve control when hiking downhill or on slippery terrain.
