UK online shoe sales shone brightest in January

According to the latest figures from UK e-commerce association Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), which has been publishing its monthly Online Retail Index since April 2000, footwear offered the single bright spot for online fashion retailers operating in the country last month.

IMRG bases its reporting on the e-commerce performance of 200-plus retailers with a UK presence. The data which informs the index relates solely to e-commerce transactions that have been completed in full.

Clothing sales declined by 4.5% year on year (YOY) in January, the index suggests. The only area of growth for fashion-related categories came from footwear, it added, revenues for which were up 4.7% on the year previous.

Online retail revenues across the board contracted by 2.2% YOY, notwithstanding the 22.5% YOY drop e-tailers experienced over January 2022. At that time, figures had been significantly impacted by the return of online shopping following the easing of national lockdowns.
