US consumers care about plastic waste
New research from campaign group the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) suggests that 70% of consumers in the US believe the economy there is “too reliant on plastic”.
It quoted figures from the Environmental Protection Agency showing there were 27 million tonnes of plastic waste in the US in 2018, around half of which was plastic packaging waste that went to landfill.
In a public survey that WWF carried out, more than 80% of US consumers said they wanted more plastic waste to be recycled.
Based on the survey, the American Chemical Council (ACC) has called on Congress to take legislative action to combat plastic waste in the US, and has proposed collaboration with businesses and plastic manufacturers to boost recycling, collection, and management of plastic packaging waste.
