A master craftsman living and working in the southern port city of Busan, South Korea, is passing on his 35 years of shoemaking know-how for free, out of concern for the advancing age of the majority of made in Korea artisans.

Master Jeon (pictured), as he is known, estimates that the number of Busan footwear artisans may decrease by more than 50% over the next decade, due to the general aging of the local shoemaking population.

Especially following the founding of his shoe brand, Azon, the experienced artisan became acutely concerned about talent development, support and marketing regarding the local footwear industry, so moved to establish a free consultancy service targeting early stage entrepreneurs, in particular.

Interested parties do not need to have any sort of production plan in place, but Master Jeon can advise on the shoemaking process “from A to Z”, he told local media, as well as provide insights and other information on the reality of manufacturing costs. He is supplying the free service in good faith, colleagues said, in the hope that younger people will carry on the “endangered” legacy of Busan shoemaking.
