UK-based shoe manufacturing and tannery group Pittards has reassured the markets that it is “mindful” of the situation in Ethiopia, which is home to one of its tanneries as well as finished goods factories.
At the start of November, the Ethiopian government declared a state of emergency for the entire country owing to an escalation of armed conflict and civil unrest in the regions of Amhara, Afar and Tigray.Pittards said: “At present, the group's operations in Ethiopia, including the free flow of goods, activities and people, have not been affected by the situation. The board is monitoring developments on a regular basis.”
Pittards make shoes for brands including Vivobarefoot at its Ethiopian facilities, partly supplied by its tannery. It also makes gloves in a separate factory.
