ISA TanTec launches first mycelium-based material
Footwear-focused leather manufacturing group ISA TanTec has confirmed that a new division, Creation of Sustainable Materials (COSM), has launched its first product.
The first material to come to market under the COSM label is called HyphaLite HP. It is 80% bio-based, complies with brands’ restricted substance lists and is, according to ISA TanTec, biodegradable.
Hyphae are the filaments that make up mycelium. The Lite part of the material’s name comes from the LITE (low impact on the environment) system that ISA TanTec uses to produce leather with low consumption of water, chemicals and energy.
ISA TanTec confirmed at the time of the launch that it is bringing HyphaLite HP to market to offer footwear brands an alternative to petrochemical-based synthetics.
