Mexico’s footwear production falls
National footwear industry associations in Latin America held an online meeting at the end of June to discuss the state of the industry in their different countries.

President of Mexico’s CICEG, Alfredo Padilla Villalpando, told his colleagues that footwear manufacturers there had produced 132 million pairs of shoes and boots in 2020, a decline of 34% compared to the figures for 2019.

He said that total footwear consumption in the Mexican market had fallen by 34% too, from around 330 million pairs in 2019 to 220 million pairs last year.

Exports of Mexican-produced footwear declined by almost 15% in 2020 to reach 18.7 million pairs. Imports fell by 28.6% year on year to reach 72.8 million.

Per capita consumption, which had been 2.7 pairs in 2019, fell by 37% to 1.7 pairs.
Mr Padilla said Mexico is the world’s ninth-biggest footwear producer and the fifteenth biggest consumer of shoes.
