Work with start-up leads to ASICS smart shoe prototype

Japanese sports brand ASICS has made an investment in a technology start-up, No New Folk Studio, which has developed a smart solution for measuring and analysing foot movement.

ASICS said on making the announcement that it intends to work with the start-up’s system, Orphe Track, to develop “smart running shoes” that will give runners real-time feedback on the way their feet are interacting with the shoe and with the terrain. This will make it easier for runners to assess their own gait, stride-length, foot-strike pattern and other aspects of their technique.

A prototype of the smart running shoes was on display at the ASICS booth at CES 2020 in Las Vegas at the start of January. The brand intends to bring the shoes to market before the end of the year.

No New Folk Studio was founded in 2014 and has worked with the ASICS Institute of Sport Science since 2017. The company won an award at an ASICS accelerator programme event for start-ups in 2019.
