Bangladesh leather exports down from last year

Numbers from the country's Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) show that Bangladesh exports of leather and leather products had a negative growth rate of 27.34% in the first six months of FY2019-20, compared with the same period of the last fiscal year.

According to EPB, as reported by the Independent (Bangladesh), the period’s leather exports brought in  $65.80 million, whereas the first six months of FY2018-19 brought in $90.56 million. Exports overall were down around 10%.

One of the reasons for this, the reports said, was that tanneries that have moved to the Savar Tannery Complex from Hazaribagh are not yet fully functional.

Bangladesh Tanners’ Association (BTA) chairman Shaheen Ahamed was quoted telling the newspaper that while Bangladesh typically exports leather products to countries such as South Korea, China and the European Union, these countries have begun using more artificial leather products and therefore importing fewer leather products from Bangladesh.

Also, he said, there’s been an increase in import duties on chemicals for protecting rawhide, which has affected the export of crust leather.

However, Mr Ahmed said with the availability of raw materials in Bangladesh — which produces more than 350 million square feet of leather annually — the leather industry is set to be an important contributor to the country’s exports.
