Sneakers are a ‘new universal language’

New York-based auction house Sotheby’s has launched its first auction dedicated to sneakers. It has teamed up with sneaker and streetwear platform Stadium Goods to offer 100 pairs of extremely rare sneakers.

Announcing the online-only auction, Sotheby’s said: “Once the domain of a dedicated core of collectors and connoisseurs scattered in select US cities, the culture of sneaker fashion has exploded to become a worldwide phenomenon, a new universal language of cool.”

The 100 pairs of sneakers are split across a total of 41 lots. They include a number of products from Nike’s Jordan brand, self-lacing shoes that Nike created in tribute to cult film “Back to the Future”, and designs adidas created alongside the likes of Pharrell Williams and Kanye West.

Pre-auction estimates range from $2,000 to $160,000, with the highest priced item deemed to be a Nike ‘Moon Shoe’, one of only 12 pairs created.

The shoes are currently being exhibited at Sotheby’s in New York and will remain on show there until the auction ends on July 23.
