Clarks confirms UK factory closure
06/03/2019
The group confirmed in a statement that a period of consultation has now ended and that the closure would take place. It will result in a total of 35 job losses.
The factory, which Clarks refers to as Morelight, opened close to the group’s corporate headquarters in Street, Somerset in 2017. At the time, Clarks said it would make up to 300,000 pairs per year of its desert boots there, ‘reshoring’ products it had been sourcing for many years from outsource manufacturing partners in Vietnam and India.
Clarks’ statement said: “Despite our best efforts, the levels of production and cost targets we hoped for could not be reached in the short to medium term. Following a period of consultation, the proposal has been accepted, and the factory will close.”
It added that 10 employees of the factory have taken up new roles within the business, but that the remaining 35 will leave the company. It said it had been offering outplacement support for these employees.
