European Commission backs new skills project
A total of 21 public and private stakeholders of the footwear, leather, textile and clothing industries in Europe have launched ‘Skills4Smart’, a new project aimed at “reshaping and updating skills and education in these traditional and yet dynamic sectors”. The project, which is being co-funded by the European Commission, will run for four years.

Footwear industry bodies CEC, Portugal’s CTCP, Spain’s Inescop and Italy’s Politecnico Calzaturiero were among the organisations that took part in a launch event in Brussels at the start of February.

One of the principal objectives of the Brussels meeting was to establish a blueprint for co-operation, through which the different sectors involved will seek to establish a Europe-wide network of vocational and educational training providers who will work to increase skill levels across each industry.

The European Commission has calculated that footwear, leather, textiles and clothing companies in Europe employ a combined total of 2 million people and turn over more than €200 billion per year.
