Although the export earnings were down by 1.3% compared to the same months in 2016, in volume terms there was year-on-year growth of 2.3%.
In fact, the export total for the six-month period of 87 million is a record figure for Spain. At the start of this century, there were first-half export volumes of 74 million, 77 million and 72 million pairs. Figures then fell during the middle years of the last decade, going as low as 49 million pairs in the first six months of 2008, at the start of the economic downturn that hit Spain especially hard.
It took until 2012 for the comparative figure to rise above 70 million pairs again and it went to 84 million in 2015 and 85 million last year.
