Vietnam: shoe and leather exports could bring in $18 billion this year

Vietnam’s ministry of industry and commerce has said the country’s footwear and leather manufacturers brought in export earnings of more than $9.6 billion in the first eight months of 2017, an increase of 12.2% compared to the same period last year.

Commenting on the figures, industry association Lefaso said overseas-owned manufacturers accounted for more than 80% of the shoes and leather exported, adding that Vietnamese-owned companies lack the resources to expand production or market share.

It said Vietnam’s shoe and leather exports for the whole of 2017 could be as high as $18 billion in the end, a figure that would mean a year-on-year rise of 10%.
