Vietnam’s prime minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, has called on manufacturers in his country to build stronger business ties with Tanzania, suggesting that trade between the two countries has the potential to reach $1 billion per year.

Tanzania’s ministers for trade and industry, Charles Mwijage, and of agriculture, Charles Tizeba, met the prime minister during a trade visit to Vietnam at the start of August.

Mr Mwijage insisted Vietnamese companies can invest immediately in Tanzania’s leather and footwear industries, as well as in fruit and vegetables, vegetable oil and cement.

For his part, Mr Nguyen said he would urge Vietnamese companies to invest in free zones and special economic zones in Tanzania, whose government he praised for achieving one of the fastest economic growth rates in Africa, currently 6%.
